CHAPTER SEVEN

Paramount Valley Blues

After we all said our goodbyes to Mr. Higgins, the weekend came and went without any delay. It was now Sunday afternoon, and we all had to head over to the big, big meeting. We only got to see some of the other students, from the other residences, once a month. You would think since we were all young, they would make it a little bit more festive for us. Instead, when we all got together, we had to sit through two hours of dry announcements!

We were all seated in the auditorium and waited for the meeting to begin. It was 4:00pm and Ms. Katurah, the Executive Director, walked on the stage. She was an older, stately woman. She had her grey and black hair in a French roll and wore a black dress with white cuffs. This was our new Executive Director, but from the looks of things, she looked like she was old enough to retire too!

Next to her was the Board of Director, Mr. Duley. He has been with the agency for a while and always had a flat expression on his face. Mr. Duley had his hair plastered on his forehead with gel. For whatever reason, he believed it made him look younger. When he spoke, he sounded like he was really bored. There was a tendency for him to say his words very slowly. His suits were too tight around his waist, but he always carried a snack with him anyway.A little granola bar one day, some trail mix the next day, or a chocolate bar the next day. It didn’t matter what it was, as long as it was pocket-sized.

“Good evening, my fellow colleagues and students. On behalf of the Board of Directors, Mr. Duly and myself, we would like to extend a warm welcome this evening! We come to you today to share some exciting updates!”

Zoey and I looked at each other, we knew this was the new Executive Director, but we have heard this type of speech before. Our interpretation of exciting is very different from the adults who work here.

“We have some new Board Members.Three of them joined us last week, and they are very happy to be here. Isn’t this exciting?”

Ambrosia looked at us and rolled her eyes.

“Do you see what I mean now? It’s always, yackity, yackity, yack,” she snorted. One of the resident aides, walked towards us. It was Lucas. Oh, uh! This may not be a good combination.

“Excuse me young lady! What is your name?” he asked, as he tilted his head. “Well, aren’t you a resident aide? Shouldn’t you all know our names by now?” Ambrosia asked in annoyance.

Lucas did a double-take. He took a step back, started to point his finger at Ambrosia, and opened his mouth to speak.

“Hey, Lucas! Long time no see!”

That temporarily snapped him out of it.

“Oh, hi, Sheba. I was on vacation for a few days,” he replied.

I tried to keep his attention on me, but no luck. He gaveAmbrosia an icy stare.
